‘Karbeethong’ means ‘moonlight shining on water’ in the local indigenous dialect, and that’s exactly what will take your breath away as you sit on the verandah on a still clear night. Built by the Buckland family in the 1920s, Karbeethong Lodge is one of the few original guesthouses on Australia’s coast still operating as a guesthouse today. Many artists, writers and poets – including EJ Brady, Banjo Patterson and others, have been inspired by this special place, however, nothing compares to simply being here. This strong tradition of creativity and the arts continues in Mallacoota today.
